Jardinier Sub Irrigation System - Product Information: How it works
How it works
Extensively tested and widely used by leading growers, landscape architects and plantscapers for more than fifteen years. Jardinier patented reservoir planter system has now been refined for household and greenhouse use. This system makes interior and exterior potted plant care simple and time saving, while providing optimum growing conditions and significantly extending the life of your plants and their costly replacements.
This sub-irrigation system has been carefully engineered to achieve two things:
Provide a healthy, consistent growing environment
Make plant care easy, efficient and foolproof.
Simply fill the reservoir ... and you will ...
Extend watering schedule to once every 2-4 weeks (depending on the size of the Jardinier container you use). The water is held without leaking or run off. The dip-stick makes checking water levels fast and easy. Even the 7'' container holds 550ml/1 pint of water.
Elininates guesswork (The over watering syndrome) by capillary action.
Elininates mess, stains and resists plant food contamination. A typical planter and saucer leaves stains and breeds insects.
Reduces plant stress and mortality rate due to temp and climate change. The effect is significant with a balanced watering program. Water is drawn into the moat. Perlite and soil media keep air, water and soil at an ideal natural balance.
Provides critical oxygen exchange in the root environment by aeration and drainage holes.
Helps to stop mould and infection & promotes healthy disease-resistant plant. These moulds can be deadly to the plants themselves. This is caused by top watering which feeds bacteria and spores. Water and nutrients are drawn up through the soil media through the process of capillary action.
Own the most cost effective sub-irrigation system, only available from Oasis Containers Ltd.

Stone faux finish does not need a decorative container to hide in.
Ideal for retrofitting your houseplants in their current decorative containers. Alternatively, the quality and finish of the containers will enable you to display them as they are.
The colours will not fade being constructed in tough UV resistant virgin polypropylene. This also applies to our more environmentally friendly polypropylene/wood mix. (See our Technical Spec
)
JARDINER SUB IRRIGATION SYSTEM - - TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION
Jardinier Sub Irrigation System - Technical Information
As with any product or service the concern for the Environment should not be far behind. With this in mind Jardinier have developed a premium alternative to their standard range of Polypropylene Containers.
Our Standard Jardinier Sub-Irrigation Range is produced from:
A virgin polypropylene co-polymer.
The container wall thickness is 1.7mm which gives a very sturdy container.
UV inhibitors prevent the colour from fading over time.
Reservoir capacity - An example is the 7'' Container, which holds 550ml/1 pint.
Our Environmental Sub-Irrigation range is produced from:
A more environmentally friendly material.
The containers are made from a Polypropylene co-polymer & Wood mix.
40% wood (By weight) mixed with virgin polypropylene co-polymer. This product has been specially developed for the injection moulding process.
Cutter shavings direct from industry to ensure a very clean product.
No sawdust is used in order to keep a consistent colouring.
No chemicals or contaminates of any nature are used.
While this is a more costly process the benefits are there for all.
Results from the use of this new material:
No chemicals used to pre-treat the wood.
Enormous reduction in the fossil fuels used to create the Jardinier range of containers
Use of a by product from a renewable resource 100% pure wood
(Swedish spruce and pine).
Recycling of the Container is of course more environmentally friendly with a 40% wood content.
JARDINER SUB IRRIGATION SYSTEM - PLANTING GUIDE
Jardinier Sub Irrigation System - Planting Guide
Directions on how to plant your house plants and herbs in the JARDINIER container.
Simple and EASY
Push fill tube firmly into platform. Place inside container.
Remove plant from existing container. Gently loosen old soil from around the root ball.
Place a small amount of soil on top of JARDINIER platform. Just enough to cover the surface. If you prefer, you can replace this method using only perlite or clay pebbles instead of layer of soil.
Place the plant on top, and continue to add soil.
Lightly top water the soil. This is only needed for initial planting. By doing this, it sets the soil.
Fill water through fill tube. Use JARDINIER dipstick to check water level.
Important to note:
Moist top soil and empty reservoir = No need to fill with water as yet
Dry top soil and empty reservoir = Fill with water
The initial planting absorbs water more quickly. The plant will acclimatize to the environment in a short while
An excellent way to fertilize your plants is with a water soluble plant food. Just mix as per directions and pour into reservoir
And don't forget. African Violets love the JARDINIER container
JARDINIER recommended soil for retrofitting standard house plants!
4 parts peat moss
4 parts bark
2 parts perlite
Or, ask your local nursery for a recommended bag of soil mix.
Orchids
The JARDINIER container works wonderfully for orchids. Ordinary clay pots have continuous moisture which evaporates outwards, cooling the soil and leaving salt deposits. These deposits can damage the roots. The JARDINIER container requires less watering.
Heres a little JARDINIER trick, to keep the container more stable for TALL orchids. Place the moat platform ( without fill tube) in the container. Pour small pebbles on top of the platform and a small amount through the platform hole. Replace fill tube. Continue to pot your orchid. This will not only make it more stable for the orchid, but will allow for good drainage.
JARDINIER recommended soil for Orchids :
If you're a beginner, by all means, go with a good ready made orchid soil mix found at a quality garden centre. Orchids can be a little tricky, so always ask for advice from the experts. Always remember, orchids need a open, loose mixture.
If you like to experiment with soils, try this soil for
Epiphytic orchids:
2 parts bark
2 parts peat
2 parts perlite
2 parts clay pellets
For Terrestrial orchids:
3 parts peat
2 parts perlite
2 parts loam
2 parts clay pellets
It is important to remember to add your fertilizer as needed to the water.

Jardinier Sub Irrigation System - All the Facts
The Case For Sub-Irrigation Of Houseplants
Top watering by pouring water on the soil is not recommended.
By using Jardinier Subirrigation Containers it will produce healthier houseplants and makes their care more user-friendly and hassle free. We know of no disadvantages.
The following is a long list but well worth reading if you have not experienced the benefits of measured sub-irrigation.
Benefits to the plants
Reduced exposure to soluble salts problems. Salts are elevated up and out of the way of the primary root zone.
Maintenance of the ideal state of 'evenly moist' is much easier. This is a healthier soil condition and reduces the exposure to precipitation of soluble salts out of solution in the dry state. This condition can result in the burning of hair (feeder) roots.
Water moves up evenly molecule by molecule, drop by drop. Capillary action facilitates maintenance of the ideal state of 'evenly moist' with no exposure to dry soil pockets.
A small measured amount of water can be delivered directly to the root zone with hypodermic like accuracy. This is essentially impossible to do with top watering. It makes sub-irrigation feasible for all types of plants including cactus and succulents.
Gentle movement of water by capillary action reduces the tendency for soil particles to compact, which improves oxygenation over time. Pore spaces do not close up as they do from the force of water moving by gravitational pull.
R&D trials conducted over several years have shown that subterranean irrigation has some real benefits. These trials have consistently demonstrated that sub-irrigated plants require less water, grow more vigorously and retain their condition for longer. The impact of temperature, climate change and the subsequent stress on the plant are reduced.
Sub irrigation allows the use of a wider range of decorative top-dressings that would otherwise be washed into the soil by top watering.
Benefits to the caretaker
The interval of time between plant watering can be extended. A 'reservoir' capability allows extra water application to cover caretaker absences (vacations, etc.).
Plants can be watered on a fixed schedule (every 2 weeks for example). Larger plants can go even longer than 2 weeks. Every 3-week plant care is definitely feasible. Small 5'' inch pot size plants might require a 10-day cycle.
A closed watertight sub-irrigation system reduces exposure to water damage of furnishings and floors.
The run -off from top watering can provide slippery areas. This can be a liability in public areas.
Benefits to the environment
Proper use of measured sub-irrigation results in a dry soil surface 100% of the time. There is no exposure to creating an environment for propagation of fungus gnats (Sciaridae). They are annoying to humans and are known to be causes for plant damaging diseases.
A dry soil surface mitigates exposure to the creation of toxic molds and triggering of allergic reactions such as asthma.
Current Situation
We know from personal experience that sub-irrigation is the method of choice for established interior plantscape companies. They obviously would not use an inferior method since they guarantee their plant maintenance. Meanwhile the retail houseplant market is admonished to 'poke and pour' and as a result indoor plants are seen as difficult to maintain.
Until now subirrigation has NOT been readily available to the UK consumer. There are even fewer products available than the last time we surveyed the field. Do you know of any other consumer product as poorly supported as houseplants?
We are aware that sub-irrigation is widely used in the interior plantscaping industry and not in the retail houseplant market.
JARDINER SUB IRRIGATION SYSTEM - REVIEWS & RECOMMENDATION
Jardinier Sub Irrigation System - Studies and recommendations
A recent and extensive study by Dr. Cheryl Wilen
of the University of California in America,
Has shown that plants grown in Jardinier Planters have a more developed root system than plants top watered. Sub irrigation also has proved to eliminate the harmful build up of salts due to top watering.
Since Jardinier Planters are a closed system, fertilisers and pesticides can be safely confined to within the planters.
As water conservation becomes more and more important to cities, states, countries and the world, Jardinier Alternative Sub-Irrigation Systems (ASIS), make more and more sense. No other irrigation systems developed to date offers all the solutions to the world's water problems that Jardinier offers, at a cost that makes economic sense.
After 3 years of extensive research in America,
at the University of California / Riverside under the
direction and intense supervision of Dr. Wesley Jarrell.
Jardinier is a line of proprietary sub irrigation systems that were developed and patented in 1989 .
Jardiniers original intent was to develop a more effective growing system for interior and exterior containerised foliage by using sub-irrigation technology and the principles of capillary action.
Jardinier Sub Irrigation Systems has proved to be so superior to traditional irrigation methods that over the past 15 years Jardinier has become the sub irrigation growing system of preference for the interior landscaper and maintenance professional in the USA.
Our testing confirms what many professional interior plant maintainers have long known. Sub-irrigation is far superior to top watering inside plants. Unfortunately, this information is little publicized to the public.
Royal Horticultural Society Advice from their Web page ...
Water
Indoor plants more commonly die of over-watering, than from drought. Over-watering eventually leads to root death and collapse of the plant. Keep plants just moist. Avoid letting the compost dry out completely. As the compost dries it becomes lighter in weight and often paler in colour. Water from below allowing the plant to take up water as it is needed, but allow excess to drain away. Brown tips and margins of the leaves often indicate that the compost or atmosphere is too dry. Always use tepid water to prevent temperature shocks to the roots.
Feeding
Liquid feeds are generally the best for houseplants. Choose one high in potash for flowering pot plants, more balanced for foliage plants. Slow-release fertiliser tabs or granules will last the growing season, but may concentrate the nutrients to one side of the pot. Specialist feeds are available for certain groups of plants such as orchids and citrus. Most plants should only be fed when actively growing in March to September; flowering plants should be fed when in bud and flower.
